This excerpt is inspired by the poems carved into the walls by incarcerated Chinese immigrants on Angel Island in the 19th Century, this project incorporates painting, video, animation, dance, and improvised music, which was recorded live by Walter Kitundu and Robin Sukhadia. While the brush is seen writing the character for country invisibly in water, I interpret the immigrants journey through gesture, conjuring a form of ritual and prayer. The birds flying across the page are streetlights, animated from a photograph of the Bay Bridge from San Francisco.
